A Time To Run, by Barbra Boxer (with Mary-Rose Hayes)

If you enjoy watching Hardball as much as you love reading novels full of mystery, romance and suspense, then A Time To Run is for you! Barbra Boxer combines her knowledge of Washington politics with an ability to tell a good story, and it will keep you guessing until the end.

The action centers around three characters caught in a love triangle that spans decades. There’s Ellen, the reluctant heroine whose idealism may do her in, Josh, a perfect politician but imperfect husband, and Gregg, a fundamentally good guy who was damaged by an unfortunate childhood and later becomes corrupted by greed.
|
The story begins in present time. Ellen was elected senator after Josh died on the campaign trail. Gregg comes to her with some information that she may or may not be able to trust, and her decision to use it will affect not only her political career, but a Supreme Court appointment and the lives of countless children. However, the story soon flashes back to the trio’s college days at Berkeley, where their innocence was tarnished by jealousy, desire, and ambition. The story follows them through the years back to present time, exploring how the decisions made in youth can have ramifications for years to come.

A Time To Run is a fun read, with the added bonus of being topical and well-informed. If you’re not into politics before you start reading, you probably will be by the time you’re done!
